G20 Cover

My Work at the G20 Summit:

  • I was very pleased to have my image, Spiral Stairs, Fort Point Lighthouse, used as the cover image for the journal of the G20 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, this past September. The journal was produced by the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, and was published by Newsdesk Media Group, London. It contains essays by many well-known economists and world leaders, including Russian president Vladimir Putin and Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto.

This photograph has been one of my most popular images, and is certainly a very creative adaptation of the original.

    Here's the original image:

"There's something about Paul's photography that makes me feel very calm and peaceful. He captures the simple beauty of the buildings he photographs."
- Diane Heer, Director, Kimball Library, Atkinson, New Hampshire

Web Site Home Page

Web Site Facelift:

  • Over the last several months I've completely renovated my web site, with new content, additional (larger) images, and a more elegant image display that lends itself to both traditional computers and mobile devices. I invite you to have a look, here: Paul Wainwright Photography.
"Your work is thrilling. Your website has dimension because it gives insight into the mind behind the creations. Yours is not a singular path."
- Pat Bianco, Music Director, Old Ship Church, Hingham, Massachusetts

Sample Pendulum Image

The Pendulum Project:

  • Is it physics, or is it art?

As reported in my last newsletter, for the past several years I've used my barn as a nocturnal photography studio, where I have been creating a body of abstract images using an LED attached to a pendulum, with the camera looking up from below. Since I'm not much of a night person, my work in the barn is confined to the winter months when it gets dark here in New Hampshire by around 4:30. I'm excited that winter is coming!

My renovated web site includes a totally new section devoted to this work, which contains an extensive portfolio of images, an inspirational slideshow with music from Sir Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations (be sure to turn up the sound on your speakers!), a video that shows how I make these images, and more. I invite you to have a look, here: The Pendulum Project.

I am intrigued by the mystery conveyed by these photographs, and this work is ongoing. Preparations for this season's crop of images includes a large turntable that will rotate the camera at a very slow but steady speed. Stay tuned!
"Your physics series is absolutely wonderful. I am thrilled and entranced by it. "
- C. Robin Janning, Executive Director, ECVA, and Editor, The Art Blog, New York

"Wow! Your images are beautiful. The collection reminds me of fine jewels in a jewelers display. [One of your images] caught my eye partly because it looks bit like joined hearts in the center... But when I saw your collection, I was delighted beyond words. They are definitely worth all your effort."
- Patricia Kincaid, Indiana

Exhibit in Exeter NH, January 2013

Upcoming Solo Exhibit:

  • I am very pleased that the Thoreau Art Gallery at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire, will be hosting a show of my Pendulum work paired (yes) with photographs from my Colonial Meetinghouse body of work. The show is titled Contemplative Nexus in the Photography of Paul Wainwright.

The exhibit opens on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, with an opening reception in the Thoreau Gallery in Peterson Hall from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, followed by a presentation by me at 4:30 pm in Alumni Lounge, which is next to the gallery. The show will run through January 15, 2014.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, please contact gallery director Loretteann Gascard, (603) 899-4201, or gascardld@franklinpierce.edu.

This is an extremely innovative approach to exhibiting work from these two apparently very different bodies of work, and I am really looking forward to seeing what the curator will do with it.
"I love your new pendulum stuff! Nothing against the old, but this is a really fun departure... I am less and less enamored of the computer stuff and trying to figure out where to go next... 'Real' pictures do make a difference!"
- Anna Shaw, Photographer, Damariscotta, Maine

Book Cover

Colonial Meetinghouse Book and Presentation:

The presentation has received approval from the Humanities Councils in both New Hampshire and Vermont. More information about the presentation, including how to bring it to your venue, can be found here: New England Meetinghouse Presentation.

    Upcoming presentations include:

    • July 10, 2014 - Springfield, New Hampshire (sponsored by the NH Humanities Council)

Please contact me if you want more information about attending any of these, or if you are interested in having me speak at your location.
"Congratulations on the funding from the state humanities councils. It is a very competitive process. I am impressed that you have continued to engage the public is this subject. It is complex and rich and your photographs and book offer people a good way to understand its value and meaning. "
- Brent Glass, Director Emeritus, National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian, Washington, DC

Keeper at Sarah Care

On a Personal Note - Giving Back to My Community:

  • As reported last January, My wife Judy and I have completed Pet Partners certification as Therapy Dog handlers with our (now almost 3-year-old) golden retriever, Keeper. Since that time, we have been making weekly visits to a local adult daycare center, Sarah Care, in Hampstead, New Hampshire. Keeper's specialty is to brighten the day for people with dementia and other disabilities. It has been quite surprising to see the impact that such a simple thing as a dog can make to people with disabilities.

It is a good feeling to be able to give back to my community in this way, and have fun with my dog at the same time!
"Thank you so much for bringing your dog to visit my mother each week. She does not remember much any more, but she always talks about the dog."
- Nancy, Atkinson, New Hampshire
