  • Current Artistic Endeavors: Really Bad Weather

Rime Ice on Mt. Washington As I write this, I am preparing to depart for my annual winter trip to the summit of New Hampshire's Mount Washington, the "home of the world's worst weather." My artistic interest is an unusual form of ice, called rime ice, which forms only at high altitudes when wind-driven, below freezing clouds hit solid objects. The ice makes feather-like formations into the wind that are as unique as individual snow flakes, and (to me, at least) are wonderful "models" for abstract art. My work on Mt. Washington is made possible by the Mount Washington Observatory, a member-supported weather observatory at the summit of Mt. Washington. One of the benefits of "membership" is the opportunity to volunteer at the observatory. In exchange for cooking and keeping the place clean, I get transported to the summit in a snow tractor, all I can eat, and a warm place to sleep for a week each winter. If the weather cooperates, I even get to go outside once in a while! My article Using a View Camera at the "Home of the World's Worst Weather" appeared in View Camera Magazine in 2004.

I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons, and a healthy, creative new year.
